FAfter a long time of rumors and speculation, Rockstar has finally revealed what could be the most anticipated game on the market right now. We finally got a glimpse of Grand Theft Auto 6 through a short teaser that takes us on a little tour of the world and what to expect from the upcoming release.

Rockstar has always been at the forefront of cutting-edge rendering techniques, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no different. It looks like a beautiful game in more ways than one, and with this feature, we’re going to take a look at the technical side of things and try to decipher what exactly is going on here.

Rockstar has been using its in-house RAGE engine to develop its games and Grand Theft Auto 6 it will be the first native version of the current generation of the developer. So naturally GTA 6 it’s the first time we’ve seen the updated RAGE engine in action and everything looks really impressive at the moment.

Rockstar is known for its incredible attention to detail and high-quality texture work, and these strengths seem to shine brightly in Grand Theft Auto 6. We can also see the use of modern rendering techniques such as ray tracing and photogrammetry, among a number of other high-quality visual effects that we will discuss in later sections.

Character models

Complex character models have always been one of Rockstar’s strongest suits, and with GTA 6, the developer created a huge collection of different NPC models full of details. It remains to be seen if these characters will have their own daytime and nighttime schedules as seen in Red Dead Redemption 2but there is no doubt that there is a drastic increase in density and detail.

Compared to Rockstar’s previous works, Grand Theft Auto 6 seems to be aiming for a very high benchmark in terms of NPCs. NPC models have highly detailed skin meshes, physics-based materials for the clothes they wear, and animations that look much more realistic than before. The character models also seem to have pretty realistic hair physics, and you can see examples of them in action throughout the trailer.

The trailer shows a bunch of different NPCs up to all sorts of antics, which probably indicates that they’re more interactive than before, which seems pretty fitting for the game’s setting. Grand Theft Auto 6 is set in a fictional rendition of Miami, so it makes perfect sense that you’ll run into lots of colorful personalities on your travels.

Shift gears in environments, Grand Theft Auto 6 will apparently introduce players to a beautiful world that is filled with tons of attention to detail that make it a true virtual escape. The trailer takes you through a bunch of different locations, from crowded beaches to muddy swamps, from luxury retail outlets to huge corporate buildings, and from urban neighborhoods to yacht trips and more. We don’t know how big Grand Theft Auto 6′The world will be at this point, but we’re sure it will be a diverse place where everything flows beautifully.

From a more technical point of view, the worldwide broadcast seems to be running smoothly. The camera shows large panoramic shots that seem to show the large draw distances shown here, and the level of detail remains suitably high for objects and areas far from the camera. We see a mild use of fog that works as a way to mask visual drawbacks in distant areas, but it still looks pretty impressive.

As for the textures, we see some high quality textures being used for different objects in the environments. Vegetation looks dense across the board, and surface textures like concrete roads, car surfaces, and different types of walls also react differently to the light hitting them. We suspect that the developer might be using some kind of photogrammetry to generate these realistic textures.

Water also plays an important role in bringing this virtual beach town to life. Naturally, we see a lot of bodies of water throughout the trailer and their rendering looks top quality. The water meshes are of a suitable high quality, and skirting the water in a high-speed motorboat causes suitable deformations.

The water also appears to have a suitably translucent surface, and the level of transparency changes depending on whether you’re looking at water from a beach versus water from a pool, which would obviously be much clearer. Rockstar did a great job with caustic rendering Grand Theft Auto 5 i Red Dead Redemption 2, so we’ll likely see the developer build on those solid foundations with this sequel.

Taking a quick look at the skybox as well, the city skyline is filled with a bunch of cloud formations that look pretty average to be honest, but what’s more amazing is how the light can interact with these clouds and add different types of dye to the atmosphere. The trailer shows multiple examples of the diffuse lighting model which looks great and adds a lot of richness to the world.

The lighting model

Grand Theft Auto 6 also seems to have made great strides in implementing the lighting model. The game appears to be using some sort of ray tracing for its global lighting solution and reflection. Reflections look quite realistic, and we can see some high-quality reflections of the world through the mirrors of vehicles in several scenes that seem to indicate the use of ray tracing for reflections. We weren’t able to detect any cases to evaluate how bounce lighting works, but overall the lighting model seems solid for the most part.

shadows within GTA 6 they are rendered for objects that are also far from the camera, and multiple light sources (both global and scene-specific) will cast shadows on objects and characters, making the world feel like an organic place. Fine-grained objects, such as strands of hair and mesh windows, also cast high-quality shadows on surfaces, and we saw no sign of shimmer artifacts along these edges.

Final thoughts on the first vision

The first glance Grand Theft Auto 6 has set the entire internet on fire with hype and anticipation, and we can’t wait to see how Rockstar further improves its technology. Historically, Rockstar games look best in their retail versions, so the final version could look even more stellar. Regardless, the developer seems to have put the power of current-gen consoles to good use to create a world unlike anything we’ve seen.

Some developers tend to process trailer images to make games look better than they really are, but if anything is to be said, Rockstar has been very transparent in their showcases, so there’s not much to worry about in this way. Also, the game’s concept of meshing a love story with a crime arc that’s clearly inspired by the adventures of Bonnie and Clyde sounds really lovely, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.
